Down and Out on Super Bowl Sunday
When I saw the subtitle to this article I was outraged. But read on. It is an outrage that Detroit and other cities look on homeless individuals as less than human and want to hide them from view. But it's great there are some thinking of clever ideas to provide people will basic necessities.

interesting article. i commend the program they developed for that weekend, but it is too bad people can't be as committed to establishing programs similar to this one year-round, and not just when it is convenient and/or necessary, ie super bowl sunday. somewhat like those crazed people who send milliions of cards and flowers only on valentines day (dont get me started on that assinine holiday!). it all seems a little selfish, and very transparent to me.

Yay, a woman who agrees that Valentines Day is assinine! Thanks be to God! :)

I'm sure you've read it already, but this really reminds me of Pastor John's article about the crime of being "Visible While Poor." He wrote about similar efforts to run off the poor and homeless from the "renovated" downtown so that they wouldn't depress the new happy shopping atmosphere.
Kansas City's homeless population is primarily downtown at the moment, and with the addition of the new Sprint Center and future "development" projects I suspect that it will soon be a crime to be homeless and downtown at the same time.
It's too bad that the efforts of giant stadium developers, etc. aren't to combat the sources of poverty, but are all too often to sweep it under some other rug somewhere else.
